What is Social-Emotional Learning?

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

People with strong social-emotional skills are better able to cope with everyday challenges and benefit academically, professionally, and socially. From effective problem-solving to self-discipline, from impulse control to emotion management and more. Social Emotional Learning provides a foundation for positive, long-term effects on kids, adults, and communities.

How do we teach Social-Emotional Skills at CalCreative?

Cool Tools

Cool Tools vividly teaches strategies for handling all forms of conflict and promotes healthy conflict resolution at California Creative Learning Academy. Cool Tools was created to ensure a caring community in which all students feel safe to learn and play without threats of physical, verbal, or non-verbal harassment of any type. Our goal is to provide students with an internal “toolbox” they can choose from when conflict arises, not just now, but for the rest of their lives. See some examples of Cool Tools below.

Responsive Classroom

Responsive Classroom is a student-centered, social and emotional learning approach to teaching and discipline. It is comprised of a set of research, and evidence-based practices designed to create safe, joyful, and engaging classroom and school communities for both students and teachers.

Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports

Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) is a way for schools to encourage good behavior. With PBIS, schools teach kids about behavior, just as they would teach about other subjects like reading or math. The focus of PBIS is prevention, not punishment.

Sort it out/Repairs

Sort it out/Repairs when conflicts take place our students are expected to participate in a repairs/sort it out procedures to help them get to the “heart of the conflict.” With the support of their teachers or school staff students engage with each other and give their perspective of the conflict. Together they explore the decisions that were made that led to the conflict and come up with ways to re-establish their relationship.

Family Repairs

Family Repairs at California Creative Learning Academy we see ourselves as a community not just a school. For this reason when conflicts continue to happen between the same students we invite their families to come in to participate in a repair. This gives us the opportunity to work together as a team to help our students through this challenge.

You are My Other Me

Our students and staff walked out of class on April 20th, 2018 to show solidarity with school’s across the country who were protesting the school shootings. Our parents and teachers surrounded our students with a paper chain of notes that contained messages of hope and peace.
